Middlesbrough have confirmed the signing of former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel on a short-term contract.

Sky Sports reported the Nigeria international was undergoing a medical on Tuesday after agreeing personal terms with the club.

Mikel, who was a free agent after leaving Chinese side Tianjin TEDA in November, joins Middlesbrough as they battle for promotion to the Premier League. They are currently fifth in the Championship table, six points behind second-placed Norwich.

The 31-year-old spent 11 years at Chelsea, making nearly 400 appearances, and winning one Champions League title, two Premier League titles, the Europa League, three FA Cups and the League Cup.

He also captained Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and has been capped 85 times for his country.

Boro boss Tony Pulis told the team’s website: "I'm pleased to get him in. He is a man with a lot of experience and quality.
