Former England manager Roy Hodgson says he will support the potential sale of Wembley Stadium if the FA think it is a good deal

Former England boss Roy Hodgson says any potential sale of Wembley by the FA would be "for the right reasons".

But Hodgson would want Wembley to remain the England team's main home, although he is not averse to the national side playing at different grounds on occasion.

The FA has confirmed it is in talks with Shahid Khan - the owner of Fulham FC and NFL side the Jacksonville Jaguars - over the sale of the ground for a reported £800m.

And Palace boss Hodgson, who managed England between 2012 and 2016, thinks any talk of "selling the crown jewels" may be alarmist.

"First of all, I don't know if a deal has been agreed," said Hodgson.

"I think that, if the FA have made a deal, it would be for the right reasons.

Stoke manager Paul Lambert explains how selling Wembley could benefit England's national team.

"They see that the amount of money they get from the deal would be advantageous and would be spent in a wise way to help our football in general.

"I don't think for one minute they would have any ulterior motives, other than the best for football in England.

"I enjoyed Wembley like all the managers before me and I would hope that games would still be played there by the England national team.

"I would be disappointed if it was going to be the end of England and Wembley but I don't believe that will be the case.

"If it meant a few other games were taken around the country, I don't see that as a negative. We did it in my time before we went to France and it was very well received.

"All I can say is that I am a massive supporter of Wembley as the national stadium, but I have great faith in the FA that they won't be making decisions lightly.

"If they think this is a good deal, then I will be behind it."

Stoke manager Paul Lambert also sees the benefits of the potential deal - and thinks there will be a great atmosphere for any England games played away from their normal home ground.

"I'm all for taking the national team around the country," said Lambert.

"I think that's a really good idea. Germany do it and it doesn't hinder them.

"I think the national stadium, Wembley, for how good it is, if you play the smaller nations probably the atmosphere is not too great. So I'm all for moving to different stadiums."

Swansea manager Carlos Carvalhal had a typically unusual response to the news that Wembley could be sold.

But Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal does not think the sale makes sense.

"You can't sell the monuments, in my opinion," he said.

"If you sell Wembley, do you say you'll sell Big Ben after this? And Buckingham Palace? Wembley is a monument in my opinion and we can't sell the monuments.

"It's culture. We can't sell the culture, in my opinion."
