Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to sign for LA Galaxy, according to Sky sources, after Manchester United agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

An announcement on the veteran striker's switch to the MLS could be made as early as Friday, as the 36-year-old makes what is likely to be his last transfer of a long and distinguished playing career.

Ibrahimovic posted on Instagram: "Great things also come to an end and it is time to move on after two fantastic seasons with Manchester United.

"Thank you to the club, the fans, the team, the coach, the staff and everybody who shared with me this part of my history."

Ibrahimovic's final match for United was the Boxing Day clash with Burnley at Old Trafford, in which he picked up another injury that has kept him out of action in 2018.

David Beckham - who now owns his own MLS franchise in Miami - told us in January that if Ibrahimovic were to join the league it would be a huge boost.

United manager Jose Mourinho said earlier this month that Ibrahimovic was likely to leave the club at the end of the season, but United confirmed his exit on Thursday after almost two years at the club.

"Everyone at the club would like to thank Zlatan for his contribution to the team since his arrival and wishes him well for the future," the club said in a statement.

Ibrahimovic had agreed a one-year extension last summer despite a serious knee injury, following an outstanding first season in the Premier League in which he scored 28 goals in all competitions.

The former PSG, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan and Internazionale star returned in November but made only seven further appearances and, when asked about his status earlier this month, Mourinho said: "We all think it's his last season at Manchester United and it will be a very personal decision for him to play or to stop.

"Only that awful injury at the wrong moment broke a fantastic couple of seasons he could, and should, have had with us.

"He's not injured. Does he feel totally happy, ready and convinced that he's in condition to help the team in this moment? No. But he's such an honest guy and such a champion, he only wants to be back with that feeling of 'I'm totally ready for it'."

Ibrahimovic has retired from international football but is considering making a return for the World Cup in Russia this summer. The MLS season, meanwhile, is already underway and Ibrahimovic's first game could be live on Sky Sports when LA Galaxy play local rivals LA FC on March 31.
