Everton benefited from a goalkeeping clanger as Karl Darlow gifted the Merseysiders all three points at St James' Park.
Darlow was starting his fourth straight league game having wrestled the No 1 jersey from Rob Elliot, but he may now find himself coming under pressure following his costly mistake.
It proved not to be Newcastle's night as Mikel Merino and Matt Ritchie both struck the woodwork either side of Darlow spilling Aaron Lennon's header into the path of a gleeful Wayne Rooney, who made him pay the ultimate price from close range.
The former Nottingham Forest shot stopper looked to make an unconventional save low down but he got his positioning all wrong as the ball squirmed out of his gloves into the path of the Everton captain.
Newcastle huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser but Darlow's error ultimately decided the contest to leave the Magpies a point and two places above the relegation zone.
