Gareth Southgate's first game as permanent England manager ended in a disappointing defeat to world champions Germany as Lukas Podolski stole the show on his final international appearance.

An experimental Three Lions side - featuring debutant Michael Keane and the returning Jake Livermore - controlled the majority of the game in Dortmund.

Failure to convert their chances came back to haunt them though, as Podolski scored a stunning 69th-minute winner on his 130th and final cap.

But what did former England international Paul Walsh make of the performances? He gave each player a rating out of 10...

Joe Hart - 7

One good moment, one not so good moment. He had a punch that lead to a chance which he should have done better with but he also made a fantastic save with one hand when it looked certain Leroy Sane would score.

Chris Smalling - 7

Also See:

He was steady. I wouldn't rave about his display, he did a decent job without any mistakes but didn't catch the eye.

Michael Keane - 7

Considering he made his debut he was nice and steady and didn't get exposed. He had one slip that led to Sane's chance but other than that was composed. He even could have scored early on - that would have been great for him.

Gary Cahill - 7

There was nothing Cahill, or the other defenders, could have done about Podolski's goal - it was a wonder strike. The captain on the night did well marshalling the new three-man defence.

Kyle Walker - 7

You know what you're going to get with Walker. He was rarely exposed at the back but didn't get forward as much as he would have liked, considering he was playing wing-back.

Jake Livermore - 7

He was unfazed coming back into the England fold after his lengthy absence. Sat alongside Eric Dier, he wasn't too adventurous but kept things nice and easy.

Eric Dier - 7

He made a few probing passes forward but kept things nice and tight in the middle of the park. Bundled his way into the area where Marc-Andre ter Stegen prevented Jamie Vardy from scoring.

Ryan Bertrand - 7

He did quite well and didn't let the team down, venturing forward with every opportunity. He was comfortable in the new-look system.

Adam Lallana - 8

In terms of creativity and getting into good positions, Lallana and Alli were our best players. Was unlucky not to open the scoring when he struck the post.

Dele Alli - 8

Bright from the first whistle. He gets himself in positions and doesn't hide. He missed chances but he was there to miss them, which is a positive way to look at his performance.

Jamie Vardy - 7

He stretched the Germany defence and made them go the other way. He put them on the back foot because they were worried about his pace and that allowed Alli and Lallana to operate in the space in front of them.
