Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's goals race analysed

MADRID, SPAIN - MARCH 23: Shirts bearing the names of Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid CF are seen on display at a mercha

Lionel Messi scored his 90th Champions League goal on his 100th Champions League start against Man City on Tuesday night. But how does that compare to Cristiano Ronaldo’s record?

The Real Madrid ace has 95 Champions League goals to his name and is two short of 100 European goals in total, but failed to find the net in a surprise 3-3 draw against Legia Warsaw on Wednesday.

Messi broke a record on Tuesday by scoring his 54th goal in Champions League group stage games, overtaking the previous record of 53 set by former Real Madrid striker Raul, while Ronaldo remains on 51 goals in the competition's group stage.

Ronaldo scored his 43rd career hat-trick against Alaves last month, moving two clear of Messi after the Barca star scored his 41st hat-trick during a 4-0 win over Man City in October.

In terms of career goals, Ronaldo also leads Messi 560-524, having surpassed the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's tally for three successive seasons.

However, Messi leads Ronaldo 16-12 for goals with club and country this season, with Ronaldo failing to score during Madrid's 5-1 Champions League win over Legia Warsaw last month.
