Montreal Impact striker Didier Drogba had to be restrained as he looked to confront New York Red Bulls supporters following his side's 1-0 defeat on Sunday.
Drogba argued with two men as he made his way to the changing room after the game, with security guards forced to intervene.
The former Chelsea forward said: "There were two fans who were showing their enthusiasm a little too much. They crossed the line a bit, that's all."
Daniel Royer's downward header from Chris Duvall's cross found its way past Evan Bush on the hour mark to guarantee the Red Bulls a seventh straight post-season appearance while Montreal remain in mid-table.
Drogba, who won 14 trophies with Chelsea over nine seasons, signed for Montreal in the summer of 2015.
