England to face Slovakia in World Cup qualifier in Sam Allardyce's opening game

Sam Allardyce's first match in charge of England will be the World Cup qualifier against Slovakia on September 4.

England were expected to face Croatia in a friendly at Wembley three days before that game to give Allardyce, who faced the media for the first time as national boss on Monday, a chance to try out team selection and tactics ahead of his competitive debut.

But the Football Association has confirmed there will be no friendly ahead of that game in Trnava, which begins the qualification campaign for Russia 2018.

Allardyce instead requested more time on the training pitch at St George's Park with his new team ahead of the trip to Slovakia.
